"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

An email address listed inside this email has been used in a known fraud before.
This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "from the desk of" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- "fund beneficiary" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "you are advise to" (this email uses bad English)
- "my direct telephone number" (a "direct line" in a scam usually means an untraceable mobile phone number used by a scammer in an internet cafe, a redirection service number that forwards to a mobile or a free voicemailbox in a different country.)
- "foreign remittance department" (Banks mentioned in 419 scams are always fake (real banks don't communicate using mobile phones or free webmail addresses))
- "central bank of nigeria" (the name of a person or institution often appearing in 419 scams)

This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

This email lists free webmail addresses. Use of such addresses is typical for scams. Lotteries, banks and any but the smallest of companies do not normally use such addresses. Criminals use them to anonymously send and receive email at Internet cafes.

i am delighted to bring to your notice this day that your long overdue
contract inheritance payment Sum of Ten Million Five Hundred Thousand
United States of American Dollars (US$10.5M) has finally been approved
and stepped down to pay you without any atom of delay from any
department or bank local or international.

I am Dr Patrick William Eze the new appointed Accountant General Fund
Foreign Remittance Department in charge of federal oil reserved
account and budgeting, my good office is currently in charge of all
incoming and outgoing fund here in Nigeria and i have been mandated by
the federal government of Nigeria to pay all the foreign dept to the
rightful beneficiaries before the end of the last quarter payment of
the year 2023.

Your payment file is right now on my table and i have gone through it
and also from the information reaching my office from our central
transfer swift board concerning the release of your fund i discovered
that you have been contacted and dealt with different department and
banks trying to receive your fund but all to no avail but i don't know
if you have taken your time and ask yourself why you have not receive
your fund up till these time but i will like to let you know the
reason why you have note receive your fund up till now.

You may be surprised to hear these from me but i will not fail to let
you know the truth, the only reason why you have not receive your fund
up till now after all you have gone through is because Nigeria is the
third world country colonized by the British government and be ruling
indirectly by late queen Elisabeth when she was alive and she
instructed the federal government of Nigeria to stop all foreign
payment to all contract inheritance beneficiaries to avoid over
floating of funds, but right now king Charles is in charge and he has
lifted the ban on all foreign payments and instructed the federal
government of Nigeria to release all outstanding foreign fund to the
rightful beneficiaries on or before the end of next month.

Base on the above payment instruction stated i will not fail to
congratulate and thank you for your patience and i will advise you to
carefully read this message and get back to me immediately to enable
me fastilate the release of your fund as instructed because time is
not much on my side.
