"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

An email address listed inside this email has been used in a known fraud before.
This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "million united state dollars" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "million dollars" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- ",000,000" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "united state dollar" (this email uses bad English)
- "foreign remittance department" (Banks mentioned in 419 scams are always fake (real banks don't communicate using mobile phones or free webmail addresses))
- "central bank of nigeria" (the name of a person or institution often appearing in 419 scams)

This email lists free webmail addresses. Use of such addresses is typical for scams. Lotteries, banks and any but the smallest of companies do not normally use such addresses. Criminals use them to anonymously send and receive email at Internet cafes.

I am Dr.Godwin Emefiele, The governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) I am contacting you today to alert you of a notification which will be a great help to you, I am the new director of fund approved payment department here in CBN and I saw a file last week in your name with all your information from our central computer stating that abandoned fund worth of $10,000,000,00 (Ten Million United state Dollars) belongs to you.

We had been Mandated by the International Communities to release this Payment to you and all the beneficiaries with Pending Transaction so as to ease Financial Tensions Caused by Covid 19 Pandemic.

Please, I want to know from you the reason why you abandoned such big fund here in our bank for long up till this moment without any claim by you. I hereby officially notifying you about the present arrangement to pay you as i have been appointed and directed to take in-charge of your fund payment here in my department, This arrangement was initiated/constituted by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) during the Meeting.

I am now in charge of your fund payment in my department here in Nigeria (CBN) and like I stated in my mail that your name appear in our Central Computer as a beneficiary who have not receive his Pending payment, Be informed that your fund of $10,Million Dollars has been approved by the (IMF) and the federal government for payment and we have decided to convert your fund into an (ATM CARD) which we will send to you in your country for the withdraw of your fund in any ATM machine in your country.
