"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- ",000,000" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "remain blessed" (scammers in West Africa like to use religious phrases)

Subject: Dear Sir/Madam,

Greeting in the name of our Lord Jesus, my name is Mrs. Jonna McCulloch
from Colorado, USA. I am the wife of Late Thomas McCulloch, My late husband
died in an air crash on the 31st October 1999 in an Egyptian airline Boeing
990 with other passengers on board. You can confirm this fact from the
website which was aired by the BBC WORLD NEWS (

After the death of my husband I was Diagnosed with Euphorically Cancer of
the Lungs, according to my doctor, my condition is really deteriorating and
it is quite obvious that I may not live long, because the cancer stage has
gotten to a very severe stage. At the moment, I cannot do anything on my
own because of my health condition. Therefore, I contacted you to seek your
assistance for the work of God. I needed someone I can trust with charity
work, who can assist me do the work of God, by helping the poor, orphans
and less privileged. My late husband deposited USD$9,000,000,00 in a bank,
and as it stands now, I have nobody as next of kin, because I have been
badly treated by close associates. I have decided to give out the money for
charity, for the help of the poor, orphans and the less privileged in
society. I don't trust all the Monks here in United State after the Gay
scandal. I want you to distribute these funds to people that need it. I
will give you 30% of the money for your personal use, while 70% will be
utilized in helping the poor, orphans, refugees, building of clinics,
schools, helping widows and whatever to the glory of God.

I will wait for your response before I go ahead and inform my Lawyer about
my intentions.
