"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

An email address listed inside this email has been used in a known fraud before.
This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "with your full names" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
This email message is a next of kin scam.
This email lists free webmail addresses. Use of such addresses is typical for scams. Lotteries, banks and any but the smallest of companies do not normally use such addresses. Criminals use them to anonymously send and receive email at Internet cafes.

Compliments of the day,

I know you must have been wondering why I wanted to connect with you in the first place. I was struck by your surname immediately I came across it and it reminded me of Engineer Mark, a civil engineer and late client of my bank and to whom I was financial adviser for years before his demise. He died in a plane crash that also claimed the lives of his wife and 3 children On 1 June 2009 while on holidays. Air France Flight 447 (AF447/AFR447) was a scheduled, international, long-haul passenger flight, operated by the French airline Air France from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. The aircraft being flown, an Airbus A330, just after 02:14 UTC, crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. All 228 passengers, aircrew and cabin crew aboard the plane were killed.

In the last 4 years or thereabout, we have made several inquiries to embassies in London and Sydney to locate any member of the deceased extended family to come forward and claim his deposit with my bank but this has proved unsuccessful so far. Considering you share the same surname with the deceased, I think you may be related to the deceased. You stand a real chance of receiving millions of Dollars from the deceased's huge bank account balance and real estate as soon as you respond to this email.

Please get back to me immediately as this issue requires urgent attention as it is right now. You are advised to furnish me with your full names to enable me reconcile that with the information on our database.
