On October 9, 2012, 15-year-old Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan was shot in th=
e head by the Taliban. It was a failed attempt to silence her =E2=80=94 and=
her leading voice for girls' education and the right of all children to go=
to school. We established the Malala Fund on behalf of Malala and her fami=
ly, working together with supporters of the cause, including the United Nat=
ions Foundation and Girl Up, and within a community of supportive organizat=
ions and individuals, to realize Malala's vision of education for all girls=
. On July 12, 2013, on Malala's 16th birthday, the Malala Fund became its o=
wn independent non-governmental organization. Beespace, a nonprofit incubat=
or, provides organizational support, and Shiza Shahid serves as executive d=
irector.

THE MALALA FUND SUPPORTS THE EDUCATION AND EMPOWERMENT OF GIRLS IN PAKISTAN=
AND AROUND THE WORLD
Through grants and partner collaborations with civil society organizations =
and individuals focused on education, the Fund is advised by a committee co=
mprising education experts, entrepreneurs, and Malala with her family. =
Before she was attacked, Malala was in the process of setting up an organiz=
ation with her friends to get girls into school and out of domestic labor. =
The first grant of the Malala Fund will continue this process and provide a=
safe space for the girls, resources for a positive learning environment an=
d an incentive program for families. "Today I'm going to announce the happi=
est moment in my life, and that is the first grant of the Malala Fund," sai=
d Malala Yousafzai in a video [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DOS4FgZYs-e=
Q&list] shown to thousands attending the April 4-5 Women in the World Summi=
t at Lincoln Center, and streamed around the world. "I invite all of you to=
support the Malala Fund and let us turn the education of 40 girls into 40 =
million girls.=E2=80=9D
THE GRANT
NOTE: MALALA FUND is giving you $850,000 USD [Eight Hundred and Fifty Thous=
and United State Dollars] grant funds to ensure that 40 girls ranging in ag=
e from five to 12 years in your community, who would otherwise be engaged i=
n domestic labor, or at high risk of entering the workforce, are able to at=
tend school. Working with the families, the organization enrolled the girls=
in school, providing a safe space for convening and with resources and sup=
port to adapt to an educational environment, such as school uniforms, shoes=
and learning materials. Each family will receive a monthly stipend, and th=
e organization and the school will continue to work with the families and t=
he community to highlight the importance of girls=E2=80=99 education. =
