"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "dear friend" (a common phrase found in 419 scams)
- "to your nominated bank account" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "hundred thousand us dollars" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- ",500,000" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "00,000.00" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)
- "central bank of nigeria" (the name of a person or institution often appearing in 419 scams)

Subject: BREAKING NEWS

Dear Friend,

I am Dr. Mrs Sarah O. Alade, the acting Governor Central Bank Of
Nigerian. I know you will be surprise receiving such mail from me
which i have gone through the suspended CBN Governor Mallam Sanusi
Lamido Sanusi, file in his office as the acting CBN Governor, i find
out what you are going through in receiving your over due contract
inheritance payment in the hands of those wicked people so called the
Central Bank Nigerian top Officials, specially the so called suspended
CBN Governors Mallam. Lamido, Sanusi. They have been frustrating you
by demanding upfront payment from you constantly, If I tell you that
they are using all these fund you sent to work against you, you might
not believe it. But it is reality.

Infact this is a great wickedness that i have never seen in all my
life before, but being a very good Christian that i am, this has
motivated my feelings a lot and i have decided to help you to get your
said fund transfer into your Bank Account without further delay as i
know that they may not elect me because i will like to make sure that
all the debts Contractor/Inheritors will received their long awaited
fund.

So i will advise you to do go ahead and send me your banking details
where you will like to receive your said awaited fund as am promising
to pay you Ten Million Five Hundred Thousand US Dollars
($10,500,000.00)as part payment and the rest will be transferred if
they retain me as the new elected CBN Governor.

Finally, you have to act very fast as you are not going to invest any
money till you received your fund as am going to make immediate
