Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

• The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
  • "my direct telephone number" (i.e. "call me on my cellphone at the Internet cafe where we scammers hang out")
  • "cheque " (Beware of any scheme that involves cashing checks or money orders and then wiring a portion of the funds somewhere - you'll be liable for the entire amount if the checks or money orders turn out to be fake, even after you have received and forwarded cash)
• This email message is a 419 scam. Please see our 419 FAQ for more details on such scams.
  
• This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

Attention Barnard Kuhn,

Your mail was received and through our office file with my boss latter, your international bank draft cashier cheque what of $850,000.00. eight hundred and fifty thousand us dollars is here with me in the office and my boss instructed me to deliver it to you when ever you cotacted me for it.

So you are now to tell me when you are coming to my country for your cheque, but if you can not be able to come by your self, then let me know so that I will go and verify with UPS or FEDEX courier service for the delivery of your cheque to your destination and verify the cost of there mailing fee and get back to you with details.
