Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Subject: HIGHLY URGENT
Dear Friend,
I guess this letter may come to you as a surprise since I had no previous correspondence with you.My name is Mr Edwin .G. Dove,I am the operational Director in account management section incharge of credit and foreign bills of one of the prime banks here in my country.
There is an account opened in this bank by one great late diamond and oil magnet who died without a written or oral WILL attatched to the account. Since his death , I personally has watched with keen interest to see the next of kin but all has proved abortive as no one
has come to claim his funds and no other person knows about this account or anything concerning it,the account has no other beneficiary and until his death he was the manager of his company.
In view of this ,if you can assist or find a reliable person who will be capable of assisting us in transferring this fund out of my country , please reply as soon as possible through my private email: director22edwin@yahoo.ca, so that I can give you details of the proposal. If you are not favorably disposed, please disregard this message.
Yours faithfully,
Mr Edwin
