"419" Scam – Advance Fee / Fake Lottery Scam

The so-called "419" scam is a type of fraud dominated by criminals from Nigeria and other countries in Africa. Victims of the scam are promised a large amount of money, such as a lottery prize, inheritance, money sitting in some bank account, etc.

Victims never receive this non-existent fortune but are tricked into sending their money to the criminals, who remain anonymous. They hide their real identity and location by using fake names and fake postal addresses as well as communicating via anonymous free email accounts and mobile phones.

Keep in mind that scammers DO NOT use their real names when defrauding people.
The criminals either abuse names of real people or companies or invent names or addresses.
Any real people or companies mentioned below have NO CONNECTION to the scammers!

Some comments by the Scam-O-Matic about the following email:

This email uses a separate reply address that is different from the sender address. Spammers use this to get replies even when the original spam sending accounts have been shut down. Also, sometimes the sender addresses are legitimate looking but fake and only the reply address is actually an email account controlled by the scammers.
The following phrases in this message should put you on alert:
- "hundred thousand us dollars" (they want you to be blinded by the prospect of quick money, but the only money that ever changes hands in 419 scams is from you to the criminals)

This email lists mobile phone numbers. Use of such numbers is typical for scams because they allow criminals to conceal their true location. They can receive calls in an Internet cafe from where they send you emails, while pretending to be in some office.

Hello,

My name is Philip Darrow the Senior Maintenance Engr. Of Tran mark Fcx London, My Company is in need of welding material, which we use for maintenance and servicing functions of underground pipelines.

The name of the material is J421 ELECTRODE. We do buy this J421 ELECTRODE at the rate of $1,890usd per packet from dealers in London , recently I discovered a supplier in South East Asia who sells at $1050 per packet, I offered my company $1,450 per packet making a profit $400 on each packet and 1000 packets were quoted by me and approved by my company.

My personal profit on the making is $ 400,000:00 (four Hundred Thousand US Dollars).I am contacting you because I quoted for the material but, can not travel out for the procurement of this J421 ELECTRODE in the sense that, I am not permitted to leave my office because of emergency cases which I am handling now. However, I quoted for it and it has been accepted.

You will act as a middleman between my company and the dealer of this material thereby buying from the dealer at the rate of $1050 and supply to my company at $1,450. You will be paid by our procurement manager before you could supply the material. I do not want the management of my company to know about this, because through this way I earn some extra money.

I only want you to assure me that you will be honest with me, and also keep this business secret between both of us, so that our company will not realize that I connived with you to inflate the price of the product for my own interest because if they do, as I said I will lose my job and my career will be jeopardized. I will explain to you more about this business if I find out that you are interested, in the meanwhile I will guide you to the success of it. We shall share our profit accordingly.
